The 1982 Carleton Board championship was posted earlier today, here's the Ottawa Board championship in which Laurentian earned the right to meet J.S. Woodsworth for the city crown.

The high school football page continues to grow as the eventual champions' regular season scores are added when found, as are all playoff results. 1982 is getting the attention this evening.

Many game summaries are quite brief, little more than a sentence or two, but the Carleton board championship warranted a bit more attention and detail. Here it is below. 

2002, June 12th, Ottawa Citizen: "Renegades Set To Go Downtown" -

Obviously inspired by Eddie Brown being named the head coach of the Orleans Raftsmen Midget team earlier this week, I dug up the article below. It's from shortly after Brown joined the Ottawa Renegades training camp for that team's first season and provides a rundown of his colourful career.

He contributed 25 receptions for the Renegades in 2002 for 316 yards and a score before being released in early September.

"REDBLACKS sign 2021 first-round pick Deshawn Stevens"

OTTAWA - The Ottawa REDBLACKS have inked their first-round draft choice from 2021, signing linebacker Deshawn Stevens to a CFL contract, the team announced today.

Stevens, 24, was selected sixth overall by the REDBLACKS in the 2021 CFL Draft. The Toronto native was coming off of a season with Maine that saw him rack up 36 tackles, including 13 unassisted, in a shortened four-game season.

Stevens transferred to West Virginia for the 2021 season, and recorded 12 tackles through 10 games.

1 (02) - OL Zack Pelehos - uOttawa

cfl.ca: "The six-foot-six, 296-pound lineman was a 2021 OUA first-team selection...Pelehos played in all 370 of the GeeGees offensive plays in 2021 and was named the team’s MVP. He made his way to the CFL Draft via the Ontario Regional Combine.

As a freshman in 2018, Pelehos was an OUA second-team all-star, a member of the OUA all-rookie team and the team’s o-lineman of the year."

Redblacks GM Shawn Burke: “Zack’s progression was evident through the combine, and what he brought to his program. He’s nasty, he’s going to be physical, and he brings the type of football we want to play.”

Redblacks Press Release: Pelehos starred at the 2022 Regional Combine. The 6’6 300lbs tackle finished first among offensive linemen in the 40-yard dash (5.34), three-cone drill (7.92), short shuttle (4.69), vertical jump (29.50in), and broad jump (8’ 9 ¾“), as well as tying for first place in the bench press (16 reps).

Redblacks GM Shawn Burke (to the Ottawa Sun): “Talking about our DNA, our physicality, there’s a big arrow up on (Hogan-Saindon). He’s a one-year starter. A lot of guys that come out of Laval and Montreal are a bit older because of the CGEP program, but he’s a little younger in age. He’ll take some time to develop, but he’s got huge upside. He’s extremely intelligent, an academic all-Canadian. He’ll come in and bring an edge to that position. To get him with that pick, we’re extremely excited.”

2 (20, Terr.) - LB Jesse Luketa - Penn State

Redblacks GM Shawn Burke (to the Ottawa Sun): “You look at it and when you can get a player of that calibre with what you would maybe call an additional pick – we hope not to have that pick anymore in the future – but let’s take advantage of it. We looked at a couple other local kids. I think it’s important to acknowledge what Jesse’s doing for this community and football and to have him associated with the Redblacks brand and give hope and inspiration to our football community means a lot. I called Jesse right after and congratulated him. I said, ‘There aren’t too many guys that can say they were drafted twice in one week.’ He was jacked to be drafted by his hometown team. We talked about, ‘Hey, we don’t expect you here. We want you to make it as far as you can. But we want you to be an ambassador for not only the City of Ottawa, but our country and the sport we all love.’ ”

Redblacks GM Shawn Burke (to the Ottawa Sun): “You look at him and he’s 6-foot 3, 220 pounds. He’s got the body for this. You see the speed on the field when you watch his film. It’s still coming together for him. He took a big jump this season where he became more of your go-to guy. He’s still got some teaching to come along. Coach LaPolice and (receivers) coach (Alex) Suber, they’ll get him there. He’s guy who’s passionate about football. And he’s excited to get in our building as well.”

4 (31) - DB Daniel Valente - Western Ontario

Redblacks GM Shawn Burke (to the Ottawa Sun): “He’s a guy that just kept rising and rising as we got through the draft process. It was always, ‘What about that Valente kid, what about that Valente kid?’ He was just a guy we kept talking about and we knew there was a certain point in the draft where it was like, ‘We’ve got to take this guy.’ ”

5 (40) - LB Woodly Appolon - Tuskegee

Redblacks GM Shawn Burke (to the Ottawa Sun): “He started at Northern Illinois, and then made his way down (to Tuskegee) with his (twin) brother (Wesly). He’s something different. You don’t see 6-foot-4, 6-foot-5 225-pound guys, that type of size. You’re always looking for size and athleticism. And he brings it. It’s something we don’t have in that group right now. He’s not going to be here this year, he’s going back to school. But he seems genuinely excited for the opportunity and we’ll track him for the year.”

6 (49) - LB Subomi Oyesoro - Calgary

Redblacks GM Shawn Burke (to the Ottawa Sun): “He’s definitely a special teams guy, but he has some potential which I don’t think he’s reached yet. (University of) Calgary went through a bit of a difficult season; usually they’ve been a powerhouse and they fell back a little. It’ll be exciting to see how he reacts to the pro camp and what he learns from that. But in terms of athleticism, he’s a body type we’re looking for. We thought we were a little lacking in that.”

7 (58) - SB Connor Ross - St. Francis Xavier

Redblacks GM Shawn Burke (to the Ottawa Sun): “Connor is a fullback but he’s also got some long-snapping skills. When we looked at our roster, we obviously have L.P. (Louis-Philippe Bourassa) who is great at what he does, but Maxime (Latour) got picked up by Toronto late last year and we thought we were a little light there. He’ll likely get a chance to go back to school. (Special teams co-ordinator) Jim Daley’s (at St. FX) and he’s a great special teams coach.”

8 (67) - RB Luca Perrier - Laval

Redblacks GM Shawn Burke (to the Ottawa Sun): “When we looked at special teams rankings, he just kept rising. He plays big — 210, 5-foot 11, and comes from a winning program. We do have two great special teamers as Canadians at running back – Gilly (Brendan Gillanders) and Jackson Bennett. Over the course of a season, you’re always going to have some ups and downs injury-wise and I believe (Perrier) gives us a chance that if he was sitting there available and ready to play, we wouldn’t see a huge fall off.”

Earlier in the day, Ottawa selected the following players in the global draft. 

OTTAWA - The Ottawa REDBLACKS made three picks during today’s 2022 CFL Global Draft, selecting offensive lineman Hector Zepeda (Round 1), defensive back Edris Jean-Alphonse (Round 2), and kicker Gabriel Ballinas (Round 3).

Zepada, 24, hails from Ensenada, Baja California, and was the only Mexican of the 13 international prospects to be selected into the 2022 NFL International Player Pathway program. The 6’4 290lbs offensive lineman spent his college career with Tecnólogico de Monterrey.

Jean-Alphonse, 25, is a product of the Laval Rouge et Or. Born in Bobigny, France, the defensive back impressed at the CFL Global Combine, where he recorded the fastest 40-yard dash time (4.55), fastest short shuttle time (4.18), and placed fifth in the broad jump (9’ 11/12”).

Ballinas, 23, played his college football at Albany State, where he earned All-Conference First Team kicker/punter honours, and was also named HBCU All American, as well as HBCU Special Teams Player of the Year. Ballinas is a native of Guadalupe, Mexico.

The Redblacks did well in this draft last year with the selection of linebacker Tyron Vrede from the Netherlands. He was third on the team with 10 special teams tackles and added another five defensively. 

"REDBLACKS round out coaching staff with additions of Mike Phair, Paul Saint-Vilien"

OTTAWA (April 25th, 2022) - With CFL training camp on the horizon, the Ottawa REDBLACKS have rounded out their coaching staff with the additions of veteran defensive line coach coach Mike Phair and former Carleton Ravens interim Head Coach Paul Eddy Saint-Vilien joining as a defensive assistant. 

A native of Mesa, Arizona, Phair is no stranger to professional football. The 52 year-old, who spent 2021 as a defensive assistant at Stanford University, has served on the coaching staff of five different NFL teams since 2009, most recently as defensive line coach of the Carolina Panthers in 2020. Before that, Phair spent 2018-2019 with the Indianapolis Colts, also as d-line coach. He has also coached with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (assistant d-line coach), Chicago Bears (d-line coach), and Seattle Seahawks (assistant d-line and linebackers coach), as well as the University of Illinois (run game coordinator and d-line coach), Tiffin University, and Arizona State.

Phair has also worked as a scout with the Buccaneers, and Seahawks, helping Tampa Bay to a Super Bowl XXXVII victory in 2003.

As a player, Phair suited up as a linebacker with ASU from 1990-1992, after earning All-Conference honours with Mesa CC.

Saint-Vilien joins the REDBLACKS after spending the last four years with the Carleton Ravens, most recently serving as interim Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator. Prior to his time with Carleton, served as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach with the Montreal Carabins between 2014-2017. The Montreal native won the Vanier Cup with the Carabins in 2014 while also capturing the Uteck Bowl in 2014 and the Mitchell Bowl the following season.

He played collegiately for the Spartans of Cegep du Vieux Montreal, as well as a year with the Laval Rouge et Or in 2000. Following his playing career he joined Laval as a video analysis coach in time for the school's Vanier Cup wins in 2003 and 2004. 

I was pleased to see Saint-Vilien's name come up. Again, said from the perspective of someone on the outside looking in, it felt like he got a bit of a raw deal in his the past few months from Carleton. Former Ravens head coach left rather suddenly and when Saint-Vilien assumed the position on an interim basis, many current and former players expressed that the post should be permanent.

In a matter of weeks, it was awarded to Corey Grant, which may turn out to be an excellent hire (he can certainly make a strong case) but Saint-Vilien stepped up when asked to and it's good to see him rewarded. 

Oct. 16th, 1976, Ottawa Citizen: "New Sooner Learns Strange Game Fast"

I spotted the article below about former Sooner Louis Dickenson while tracking down the results of the 1976 senior high school season. 

The body building program appears to have paid off as Dickenson made the 1977 all-conference team. After his playing days, his accomplishments were listed in an advertisement for a local event called  "Building The Body Beautiful" in 1984.

I believe he continued to compete through at least 1985. 

"Time Heals Wounds as Clair, Rough Riders Make Up"

There weren't many on-field highlights to the 1993 Ottawa Rough Riders season but the naming of the stadium after Frank Clair was a notable one off the field. 

Perhaps scheduling this event when the Doug Flutie-led Calgary Stampeders were in town wasn't the wisest choice. I doubt anyone was particularly stunned when the Stamps went on to spank the Rough Riders 47-22.

But there are far more heinous Glieberman missteps on what is a very long list. Fans got to see a wrong made right by the unlikeliest of sources. 

The 1964 Laurentian High School Senior Team

Over the past few days, I've worked on adding far more detail to the high school page. Most seasons included little more than the championship game's score and a brief summary, but I'm now working from 1927 up to the present to add regular season results for the eventual champion, as well as playoff scores for the league. 

1964 got the bulk of the attention this morning. Photography in the local newspapers began to improve around this time so the images displayed with the articles tend to be easier to copy. We have a couple of examples below involving the eventual champion Laurentian. 

Joe Upton is back coaching the Laurentian senior football team. Upton, a former Rough Rider star lineman, took ill a few years back and had to take things easy. But he feels fine now and is anxiously awaiting the start of the senior league schedule. In the picture with Upton are, back row, left to right, Jim Foley and Doug Smith. Kneeling in front is Mark Ciavaglia. 

The above is from the September 22nd Ottawa Journal. The picture below is from two days later, but appeared in the Ottawa Citizen.

Upton was a former Rough Rider but Foley was a future one. The team drafted him in the first round, ninth overall, in 1969. He played for Montreal for a couple of years but finally joined the Rough Riders in 1973 and played through to the 1977 season inclusively, winning two Grey Cups along the way. He is a member of the Ottawa Sports Hall of Fame.

In the image below, sporting a different number, Foley is getting some instruction from Upton during the Western semi-final game in November against Rideau.

The mention of Upton's illness in the first picture casts a bit of a shadow on that otherwise happy occasion. Upton had suffered a heart attack during a game in 1961 and while the caption states that he was feeling great, he would succumb to a heart seizure at only 42 years of age in 1967. His obituary appeared in the March 2nd Citizen that year.

One of several articles about his passing included the November 1964 image above as an illustration of Upton "in happier times". No doubt that's true, as they won the championship that year. They would win it under Upton's guidance as well in 1965 and, as if to honour his impact on the program, in 1967 following his passing.
