IJFL (Junior, 1952 - 1969)

Between 1952 and 1957, Ottawa had its own league affiliated with the Canadian Junior Football League. It was originally known as the Ottawa-Hull Junior Football League in 1952, then the Junior InterProvincial Football League in 1953. The Hull Tigers had already played a series of eight exhibition games in 1951, winning six.

According to the CJFL's website, the league ceased to compete after the 1957 season because they found the rest of the Ontario teams too strong. Lack of competition from within may have also played a role; a glance at the last two seasons will show that St. Anthony was ridiculously dominant.

The Hull Tigers returned to an exhibition season in 1958. The Ottawa and District League came into being in 1959 and the league came to be known as the Interprovincial Junior Football League again in 1962.

In some cases, I have copied the standings as provided by the CJFL's impressive historical section.  Some scores are missing, and I shall make an effort to locate them myself. Some results will include teams from a Montreal-based division that began playing an interlocking schedule with the Ottawa teams in the 60s but I do not include scores of games between those Montreal team, only of games involving an Ottawa/Hull/Gatineau club.

While the teams below may not be commonly-known, it would appear that some familiar names have been involved with them in the past.  The Hull Tigers at one point were coached by former Rough Rider Wilf Tremblay, while Don Holtby played four years with St. Anthony prior to becoming Head Coach of the Sooners in 1961.

Note: The above differ from the CJFL record book. St. Anthony was docked three of its wins due to using ineligible players. This was reported in the September 15th Ottawa Journal so I suspect that the games highlighted in red below became wins for the opponents.

Regardless, as you'll see below, the September 25th Ottawa Citizen reported a reboot of the league. So all the games played to that point became largely meaningless. The standings above reflect the results of games played after that date but because the teams often played at 8PM on Thursday nights, results are often hard to come by.

1958
St. Anthony's club became directly affiliated with the Rough Riders and adopted their name. They played in a junior version of the Big Four.

The Hull Tigers played an exhibition schedule in 1958 before coming a charter member of the Ottawa District Football League section of the IJFL in 1959.  They were joined by teams from Hawkesbury (Flyers/Hawks) and Vankleek Hill (Colts), then the Ottawa Sooners came aboard in 1960.

NDG Maple Leafs 59 @ Vanier Vikings (??)

Notes: Cornwall dropped out in August, just prior to the start of the season...Ottawa Sooners were awarded the championship on the Ottawa side of things. Vanier, due to injuries and other factors, were unable to field a team for playoff matches come mid-October...The two Quebec teams met in a 3-game series (!!) in which Verdun Invictus was victorious over long-time Sooners rivals Notre Dame de Grace...Sooners then beat Verdun soundly, 40-00 in a game shortened due to skirmishes between players and fan involvement

Sooners traveled to Windsor and skunked the AKO Fratmen 33-00 on a field that then coach Don Holtby called "the worst he'd ever seen"...They would meet Saskatoon again in the Canadian Championship at Lansdowne Park but lose 28-07.
